Reverend Thomas Plathottam, C.S.T.

November 8, 1947 ~ January 10, 2012

Reverend Thomas Plathottam, C.S.T., a priest of the Congregation of St. Therese, unexpectedly went to meet his Lord and Savior on January 10, 2012 while on Sabbatical in the Philippines. Father Plathottam was the former longtime pastor of Saint Luke Parish in Ellington, Connecticut. Affectionately known as Father Tom, he lovingly ministered to the parish family for 11+ years. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. Father Tom was born in Kizhaparayar-Kerala, India, on November 8, 1947, a son of Mathew and the late Aleykutty Plathottam. He joined the congregation in 1965 and received his education at the Little Flower and Saint Joseph Pontifical Seminaries. He professed his first vows in 1967 and his final vows in 1971. He was ordained to the priesthood in Kothamangalam, India, on December 16, 1974, by Bishop Mar Mathew Pothanamuzhy. After ordination, Father Tom worked as a staff member at the Jyoti Niketan School in Azamgarh (India) for one year. From 1976-1980, he did missionary work in Nichlaul (India). The following 11 years he was a social worker in Attapadi (India) prior to coming to the United States. With great humor, he often enjoyed telling stories about his experiences as a missionary in India, especially his exploits while traveling from village to village on a horse through very muddy terrain. His heart always remained faithful to his missionary roots. Within the Norwich Diocese, Father Tom was assigned to St. Joseph Church in Windham County on March 19, 1990, as Parochial Vicar. He briefly returned home to India nine months later. In 1991, he came back to the Norwich Diocese and was assigned as temporary Parochial Vicar for several churches, including St. Joseph (North Grosvenordale), St. Mary (Putnam), St. Luke (Ellington) until February 22, 1993, when he went to St. John’s Church (Old Saybrook) as Temporary Administrator and then became Parochial Vicar of St. Mary Church in Putnam. Later on, he was asked by Rev. Daniel Hart, the Bishop of Norwich at the time, to be Pastor of St. Luke. He took on the role in October 20, 1999, until his Sabbatical. Through his financial acumen, a church heavily in debt became a flourishing and financially healthy parish. He successfully ran a capital campaign to build a parish center in 2004. The campaign raised $1.4 million, and in 2006, the parish center became a reality. Also important to him during his tenure at St. Luke was his prison ministry as Chaplain at CRCI and Enfield CI and the inmates who sought his spiritual direction. In addition to his mother, he is predeceased by his brother Jose Plathottam (Canada). He is survived by his father Mathew Plathottam and loving family, Sister Rose Plathottam, S.C.N. (India); James and Sarala Plathottam (India); Sister Anice Plathottam, S.A.B.S. (Kenya); Mathew and Sherly Plathottam (India); Devisiachan and Alice Plathottam (India); Bobby and Shiney Plathottam (Canada); Lissy and Seby Manavalan (Canada); Tessy and Martin Chamakalayil (Canada); Soly and Mathew Vettukallel (California); Sojan and Lisa Plathottam (Canada); sister-in-law Rani Plathottam (Canada); and many nieces and nephews. A Parish Mass in his honor was held on January 17. Most Reverend Michael R. Cote, Bishop of Norwich offered a Memorial Mass, January 28 at St. Luke Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke Church, P.O. Box 246, Ellington, CT 06029. To share a memory or for online condolences please visit: www.pietrasfuneralhome.com.

Reverend Robert W. Cronin

Reverend Robert W. Cronin

August 15, 1926 - December 28, 2011

The Rev. Robert W. Cronin died on December 8, 2011 at his home in the McAuley, in West Hartford. The son of William H. and Mary E. (Wilson) Cronin, he was born on August 15, 1926 in Hartford. Educated at St. Michael School, he went on to St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, St. Bernard Seminary in Rochester, NY, St. John Seminary in Brighton, MA and St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, MD. He was ordained on May 22, 1952 in St. Thomas Seminary Chapel. He served as assistant to the pastor at St. Patrick Church in Mystic (3 years), Sacred Heart Church, Groton, (2 years), and St. Mary Church, New London (8 years). At St. Mary Church he was also made Director of Catholic Charities (New London district). At the beginning of his second year of ministry the former statewide Diocese of Hartford was split into three with the eastern portion of Connecticut becoming the Diocese of Norwich. In 1965 he was appointed pastor of St. Maurice Church in Bolton, and made director of the Diocesan Liturgy Commission, elected also to the Priests’ Senate of the Diocese of Norwich. Liturgical updating of St. Maurice Church building and the construction of a parish center were accomplished during his 15 years there. He made it a point to learn every parishioner’s first name as he felt this was very important. He was next assigned as pastor of St. Agnes Church, Niantic (10 years). And in 1990 he was assigned to St. Colman Church in Middlefield. In each of these parishes, he updated the physical plants (in some cases, substantially), however his focus was primarily on bringing renewal to the liturgical experience for those he served. In 1988 he was made a member of the diocesan Presbyteral Council, a post he held until 2008. In 1996 because of increasing deafness he reluctantly retired and went to live with his brother in West Hartford, eventually moving to the McAuley in 2009. In February of 2011, the parish of St. Maurice rededicated the Parish Center Library and renamed it in honor of Fr. Cronin. He is survived by his nieces, Raelene L. Cronin, and Karen C. Seligson and her husband Ray; his great nephew Alexander C. Seligson and sister-in-law Elizabeth Cronin. He was predeceased by his brother, William H. Cronin III, and his sister and brother-in-law, Louise M. and John J. Cronin. He would like to think that his most important contribution in each parish was the spiritual and liturgical enlightenment he offered. On Saturday, December 31, 2011 in St. Maurice Church in Bolton, the Most Reverend Michael R. Cote, D.D., Bishop of Norwich, celebrated the Funeral Mass for Fr. Cronin with Father’s brother priests as concelebrants. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Diocese of Norwich, Retirement Plan for Priests, 201 Broadway, Norwich CT 06360. Molloy Funeral Home, West Hartford has care of arrangements. On line expressions of sympathy may be made at www.molloyfuneralhome.com.

September 4, 1931 - December 4, 2010

Bro. Donat J. Daigle, OMI, 79, died at Blair House, Tewksbury, MA on December 4, 2010 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Lowell, MA on September 4, 1931, a son of the late Wilfred and Cecile (Morrissette) Daigle.

Bro. Donat entered the Oblate Novitiate in Colebrook, NH on October 31, 1953 and made his first vows there on November 1, 1954. He professed perpetual vows on November 1, 1960 in Bucksport, ME.

Inspired by the example of his uncle, Fr. Donat Morissette, OMI, he began studies at Bucksport, ME, but as time went on, he realized his talents were drawing him to the life of a brother rather than a priest.

Following Bucksport he was assigned briefly to Immaculata Retreat House, Willimantic, CT. He then joined with Bro. Paul Ricard, OMI to form a mobile team in 1979. They were given a van and the tools needed for repairs and minor construction. They traveled the province, saving the Oblates thousands of dollars.

Bro. Daigle served at the Shrine of Our Lady of Grace, Colebrook, NH, Ephpheta House, Manvill, RI, and Our Lady of Good Counsel House, Lowell, MA. From 1981 to 1985 he was on the staff of the Oblate Seminary in Natick, MA while serving two terms as a provincial council member. He was the first Oblate brother to be a member of the Provincial Council. In September of 1984, he returned to the Shrine of Our Lady of Grace in Colebrook and was the first Oblate brother to be appointed superior of a Northern Province Oblate Community. He served three terms as superior in Colebrook, and stayed on for one more year as treasurer.

In 1993, he was assigned to the staff at the St. Paul Center in Augusta, ME. The work that the maintenance team did there was extensive and very professional. He also served as treasurer and assistant to the superior. In 1997, this property was transferred to the Diocese of Portland, ME and he remained there until February of 1998 to close the center after many years of service to the Catholic community of Maine.

Bro. Donat joined the staff at the Immaculata Retreat House for a second time in March of 1998. He then returned to Colebrook, NH in April of 2006. He remained until fall of 2010, when due to failing health, he was assigned to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Residence in Tewksbury, MA.

Brother Paul Marcil, MSA

Brother Paul Marcil, MSA

December 18, 1938 - July 16, 2010

Br Paul Marcil of the Society of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles (MSA) died on July 16, 2010 at the Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC. He had been a member of the Society since his first promise of fidelity on June 7, 1968, when he was just 29 years of age.

During his early years of membership in the Society, Br Paul was cook at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, CT, and then as resident in the Society House on Quincy St. he was both part-time cook and one of the members designated to pick up food and supplies. While in Cromwell, he worked as a volunteer at the St Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen in Middletown, CT. And in Washington, DC, he provided food and supplies delivery and other forms of manual service for the Little Sisters of the Poor.

He took human need seriously, and would pray for the needy on finding out about them at any time. At Mass, he would often do the first reading for those present, slowly, with difficulty, but eloquently. He loved to cook, and especially to cook for visitors.

We will miss this unique brother of ours, and his memory won’t fade. He will have a special place in our family stories for a long time ahead. We pray for his soul, but also ask his prayers, which we’re confident will win us much good from the Lord, for our community and apostolic initiatives.
