NORWICH — Monsignor Anthony S. Rosaforte retired as rector of Saint Patrick Cathedral in Norwich effective July 1, 2026. Father Brian J. Romanowski has been appointed as the new rector.

In accordance with the Code of Canon Law (Canon 538, section 3), pastors are asked to submit their resignation to the diocesan bishop upon reaching the age of 75. Monsignor Rosaforte submitted his resignation at that time and continued serving as rector of Saint Patrick Cathedral for more than twelve additional years before Bishop Richard F. Reidy accepted his retirement.

Monsignor Rosaforte will remain in residence at Saint Patrick Cathedral as rector emeritus. Within the Diocese of Norwich, the title emeritus has traditionally been used for a retired pastor who continues to reside at the same parish. The title carries no special authority or responsibilities. As his health permits, Monsignor Rosaforte is expected to assist in ministry at Saint Patrick Cathedral.

Monsignor Rosaforte has a long and distinguished record of service. There have also been serious allegations made against him which were previously reported. Monsignor Rosaforte vigorously denies those allegations. The matter has been referred to the Holy See for guidance and direction, and the Diocese is awaiting a response.

The allegations do not involve a minor, and there has been no prohibition from ministry during the canonical process.

The Diocese of Norwich is committed to investigating all allegations of clergy misconduct thoroughly and ensuring that canonical processes are conducted fairly and in accordance with Church law.
