Students, teachers, staff, and friends of Sacred Heart School in Norwich and St. James School in Danielson were given a powerful and moving experience as they attended St. Luke Productions’ presentation of Tolton: From Slave to Priest.
More than a performance, the production brought to life the extraordinary story of Father Augustus Tolton, the first African American priest in the United States, through a compelling blend of drama, music, and multimedia storytelling.
Father Tolton’s journey to the priesthood was marked by perseverance, faith, and an unwavering trust in God. Born into slavery in Missouri, his early life was shaped by hardship and uncertainty. Yet through the courage of his family and the grace of God, he was able to grow in faith and pursue a calling that would ultimately impact countless lives.
As highlighted in the production, Father Tolton (portrayed by actor Jim Coleman) faced significant obstacles on his path to the priesthood. Rejected by seminaries in the United States because of his race, he continued to discern his vocation and was eventually ordained in Rome. He returned to serve in America, ministering with humility and dedication, becoming a powerful witness to unity, dignity, and the universal call of the Gospel.
Since 1980, Saint Luke Productions has been dedicated to evangelizing through the arts, bringing the stories of Christ and the saints to life for audiences around the world. Their work, including the acclaimed film Thérèse, has inspired millions.
The performances were made possible through a grant from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Catholic Communication Campaign. Through this support, and through the efforts of Father Edmund Naldony, who arranged for performances in all the dioceses across Connecticut, this powerful production was able to reach students and communities throughout the state.
Father Tolton’s life continues to speak powerfully to our time. His story is one of perseverance in the face of injustice, faith in the midst of adversity, and a deep commitment to serving God’s people. Through productions like this, his witness is brought to a new generation, reminding us that when we trust in God and remain faithful to His call, He can work through us in ways far beyond what we might imagine.
