May Crowning Reminds Us to Honor Our Heavenly Mother All Year

May Crowning

May is the month of Mary.  It is also the month we celebrate Mother’s Day.  This year Mother's Day was extra special as the First Holy Communion class of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Baltic participated in the Crowning of the Virgin Mary statue prior to the 10:00a Mass.

The students, who received First Holy Communion on May 11th, processed down the aisle each carrying a red rose. The roses were placed in a vase which was then placed in front of a statue of the blessed Mother.

Throughout the month of May special devotions honor the Virgin Mary.  “May Crowning” is a traditional Catholic ritual recognizing Mary as Queen of heaven and earth.  Mary teaches us what it means to pray and always points us to Jesus, her son, Lord and the source of her strength.

At the end of Mass, Father Joseph Tito, the pastor of St. Mary Church, enrolled the new communicants in the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.  Each student received a scapular and wore it proudly in procession down the main aisle.

If your church held a May crowning this year and you would like to share a picture of the event, please send it to editorial@norwichdiocese.net Be sure to include the name and city of your parish along with the photographers name. We will post as many as we can in the gallery.

The Assumption of Mary: Our Mother’s Homecoming
On August 15, the Church celebrates one of the most beautiful feasts of the liturgical year: the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This day is more than an occasion to honor Our Lady; it is a glimpse into the destiny that awaits all who live and die in Christ. Declared a Holy Day of Obligation, the Assumption invites the faithful to gather in joy and thanksgiving for God’s masterpiece in Mary. The Assumption teaches that at the end of her earthly life, the Blessed Virgin was taken up, body and soul, into heavenly glory. While the Church has lo...

Catholic Parish Takes Flight at Annual Balloon Festival
Editor's Note: Sometimes the best opportunities to share the Gospel come when we step beyond the walls of our churches and meet people where they are. The following story from the Archdiocese of Hartford shows how one parish found a creative way to do just that—offering a joyful, visible witness to Christ at a community event. May it inspire other parishes to seek similar ways of planting seeds of faith in unexpected places. And if you get a chance, head up to Plainville and check out the balloons! A rainbow of balloons painted the sky during the Plainv...

The Padre Pio Foundation of America Promotes Devotion to the Saint
For nearly 50 years, at the western edge of our Diocese, in Cromwell, the Padre Pio Foundation of America has promoted devotion to the Saint. The Foundation endeavors to uphold the legacy of Saint Padre Pio’s love and caring for those less fortunate, and the Foundation does so in many remarkable ways.   Some twenty years ago, my wife and I were driving through Cromwell, and viewed a sign heralding the Padre Pio Foundation. Curious, we drove up and entered the building. Immediately, we were welcomed by the Executive Director, Julie Fitts Ritter, who enthusia...
