Festival of Trees and Traditions Celebrates 50 Years of Holiday Magic

This December, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford welcomes the community to the Festival of Trees and Traditions: 50th Anniversary Golden Holiday Event, a cherished celebration of artistry and holiday spirit running from December 5–15, 2024. This year’s festival features a dazzling array of festive trees and wreaths, each uniquely designed and generously donated by individuals, organizations, and businesses throughout the region.

The Diocese of Norwich is proud to contribute two special trees this year, showcasing the spirit of giving and creativity that the season inspires.

The first tree, Cold HANDS, WARM Heart, is a heartfelt expression of generosity. Adorned with over 200 pairs of mittens and gloves, 40 hats, 15 scarves, and one blanket, this tree embodies the mission to share warmth—both physical and spiritual—with those in need. The donations collected will benefit local charities, ensuring that individuals and families stay warm this winter.

The second tree, A Book is a Gift that Keeps on Giving, captures the joy of learning and imagination. This ingenious "book tree" was crafted by Glenn Miller, a parishioner from Blessed Sacrament Parishes in Vernon/Tolland. Shaped like a Christmas tree, the structure is a custom-built bookcase that holds over 200 new books, donated by generous parishioners from across the diocese. The books will be distributed to children and families in the community, spreading the gift of knowledge and the wonder of reading.

The Festival of Trees and Traditions is more than a holiday event—it is a way for the community to come together to support the museum while celebrating the beauty of the season. Proceeds from the festival directly benefit the museum's exhibitions and educational programs, making it a gift that continues to give all year long.

Join the Diocese of Norwich and the Wadsworth Atheneum in celebrating 50 years of this beloved tradition. Stroll through the gallery, marvel at the artistic expressions, and let the spirit of the season inspire you. May this golden anniversary remind us all of the power of generosity, creativity, and faith to illuminate the world.

For tickets and more information, visit Wadsworth Atheneum’s website.

We hope to see you there!

Signs of Our Faith
Discovering the Meaning Behind the Symbols That Tell the Story of Our Catholic Faith The San Damiano Cross Few symbols are more closely associated with St. Francis of Assisi than the San Damiano Cross. More than a beautiful crucifix, it was before this cross that Francis received the call that would shape the rest of his life. While praying in the small, weathered church of San Damiano near Assisi, Francis heard Christ speak the now-famous words: "Francis, go and rebuild My Church, which, as you can see, is falling into ruin." At first, Francis und...
