The beloved custom of displaying figures depicting the birth of Jesus Christ began with St. Francis of Assisi, who created the first Christmas crèche on Christmas Eve in 1223.
The blessing of the manger or nativity scene may take place on the Vigil of Christmas—that is, Christmas Eve—or at another suitable time. Many families and parishes set up their mangers earlier in Advent. It is perfectly appropriate to bless the nativity scene when it is first displayed, even if the figure of the Infant Jesus has not yet been placed. When the Baby Jesus is added—traditionally on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning—a brief prayer or a repetition of the blessing may be offered.
When the manger is displayed in the home, it is fitting that it be blessed by a parent or another family member.
All make the Sign of the Cross as the leader says:
Leader: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
R/. Who made heaven and earth.
Scripture: Luke 2:1–8 — The Birth of Jesus
Prayer:
Lord, bless all who look upon this manger.
May it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus
and raise our thoughts to Him—
who is God-with-us and Savior of all,
and who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
R/. Amen.
