Lifeboat: A Radical Reorientation for Catholic Survival

The Cathedral of St. Patrick’s in Norwich, CT is pleased to welcome Fr. Herald Joseph Brock, CFR (Franciscan Friars of the Renewal), for the 2026 Lenten Mission, on March 9–11, 2026, at 6:30 PM each evening. The Mission is open to all—please save the dates and help spread the word.

A Lenten Mission is an invitation to “put out into the deep,” embrace deeper conversion, anchor ourselves more firmly in Christ, and rediscover our mission in Him. We look forward to gathering as a diocesan Church for these grace-filled evenings of clarity, encouragement, and renewal.

This year’s Mission, entitled Lifeboat: A Radical Reorientation for Catholic Survival, will offer three evenings of reflection and prayer focused on the present moment in the Church. Together, we will consider the call to personal and communal conversion, repentance, renewal, and seek to strengthen our faith and resolve in hope.

Monday & Tuesday – March 9th & 10th, will feature presentations and guided reflections exploring “where we are, how we got here, where we are going, and how we get there.” Fr. Brock will offer clarity, encouragement, and a renewed vision for faithful Catholic living today. These nights will be especially valuable for catechetical leaders, parish ministers, catechumens, engaged parishioners, and all who seek to live and share the Gospel in today’s world. Light refreshments will be served.

Wednesday – March 11th, will be a Night of Prayer for Renewal. In Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Fr. Brock will offer a brief reflection. Many priests from around the Diocese will then join in offering extended opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This will be a powerful evening of encounter. You are invited to come and entrust yourself and our diocese to the mercy and love of Jesus. A reception in the Parish Hall will follow Benediction.

Looking foward to seeing you there this Lent and together step into the boat with Jesus to be convicted and renewed for the glory of God, our good, and the good of the whole Church.

Reidy. From Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday, these sacred celebrations offer an opportunity to walk with Christ through His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Bishop Reidy Reflects on the Hope of Holy Week
Carpe diem is an old Roman expression frequently translated as “seize the day.” It reminds us to take advantage of the present moment and not to let opportunity pass us by. Whether an athlete in competition, an investor in the market, or a suitor in love, opportunities must be recognized and grasped, or they can pass away and be lost. Holy Week is one such opportunity. It is the most important week of the Church’s year because it commemorates the most important events of history. The Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and our faithful acc...

The Week That Changed the World: Stories to Lead You Through Holy Week
The Week that Changed the World I’ll admit it, I look forward to Holy Week even more than Christmas. Every year, Palm Sunday feels like the Church is saying, “Come in close. Pay attention.” We start with palms, procession, and Hosanna—remembering the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem—and then, almost immediately, we hear the Passion. That shift isn’t jarring by accident. It’s the Church giving us the full Gospel in one sweep: the praise, the suffering, the Cross, and the promise of the Resurrection. Palm Sunday doesn&rsq...

‘Something’s Happening’: Catholic Converts Surge in Many U.S. Dioceses
As Catholics across the United States prepare to welcome a striking rise in new converts this Easter, the Diocese of Norwich is very much part of that larger story of renewal. The National Catholic Register reports significant growth in dioceses nationwide, and here in Norwich that same momentum is clearly visible, with the Diocese recording a 112% increase and welcoming 98 catechumens and 152 candidates this year—the highest combined total in 10 years. This article offers a timely national perspective on something we are also seeing close to home: people are searchin...

"The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me." (Is 61:1) The 2026 Chrism Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, March 31, at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Norwich. The Most Rev. Richard F. Reidy, Bishop of the Diocese of Norwich, presided over the sacred liturgy, which marks a highlight of Holy Week. This special Mass featured the bishop's blessing of the holy oils — used throughout the year for sacraments such as Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders — and the Renewal of Priestly Promises by the clergy ...

Diocesan Women's Conference Speaker's Journey Inspires
Jennifer Hubbard was the keynote speaker at this year’s Diocesan Women’s Conference. Jennifer lost her daughter in the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown. One would think that her keynote would be inspiring while at the same time including sad recollections of a terrible low point in her life. But that could not be farther from the truth! Jennifer’s talk was filled of inspirational antidotes from her life as a cradle Catholic- sharing very frankly the ups and downs of her faith journey. She stressed that as a believer she can always count on two facts - ...
