Fourth Sunday of Advent- Love

As we celebrate the fourth Sunday of Advent our Advent journey comes to a close. The patient (or impatient) preparation and waiting now lies behind us and all that we did (or did not do) is history.  We move forward together into the Christmas Season overflowing with God’s love – an unconditional love that was freely given to all of us undeserving human beings. This gift was given to us so that, like all good gifts, we would share it with others.

How are we going to share the amazing gift of God’s love for humankind this Christmas?

  • Look for ways to do random acts of kindness for people around you.
  • Think about conversation starters you can initiate with strangers
  • Put your phone away when in elevators, in lines, and in spaces where people wait.
  • Address your cashier or waitress by name, acknowledging him or her as a person.
  • When you see someone who lights up the room, tell them they radiate Christ.
  • Thank someone you see offering another person assistance.
  • Go out of your way to be friendly and nice, role modeling the Father’s love.
  • Put someone else’s needs before your own without anyone knowing it.

When we do any of these things, we are bringing the Father’s love, personally, to people and living out the commandment He left for us – Love one another!  The more we practice sharing that love, the more natural it will be for us to give.  We will no longer have to force ourselves to reach out to our brothers and sisters rather it will come naturally. When we understand the importance of God’s love in our lives and see it as the ultimate gift we can receive, then its value can only multiply when we share that love with others.

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name He may give you. This I command you:
Love one another.

John15: 16-17

Know that you are in our prayers in a special way this Advent season…

Remembering September 11th - Mercies in Disguise
Editor's note: The following article was originally published Sept. 10, 2023. It is republished to mark the 24th anniversary of 9/11. It highlights the very best of our shared humanity—the kindness, compassion, and generosity that transcend boundaries of faith, culture, and nationality. We share it again here as a reminder that, even in times of darkness, goodness and light can still be found in the world. Sometimes, the best stories come from unexpected moments of inspiration. Recently, I had a unique experience attending Mass at St. Columba in Columbia...

Fostering Genuine Encounters with One Another
Dear Friends in Catholic Education, The world in which we live is experiencing change at a pace unlike any we have known before. In many ways, it mirrors the dramatic shifts of the Industrial Revolution, when the cotton gin transformed agriculture, the telephone redefined communication, and the miracle of flight reshaped human possibility. Today, we find ourselves in the midst of another revolution, one driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and technological innovation, that will profoundly influence our children’s future. In this moment of transformation, Cath...

Vacation’s over: How to get Back into the Routine with Joy and Hope
After days of vacation this summer, many people have returned to their usual routines, leaving behind long, peaceful days and that feeling of freedom from schedules or obligations. The return to school, the early-morning rush, and the many responsibilities of work and family life can sometimes lead to fatigue and even a certain melancholy. However, this time also offers the opportunity to begin anew and embrace Christian joy and hope with faith. Father Juan José Pérez-Soba, a diocesan priest and professor of family ministry at the Pontifical John Paul II Theological I...
