Lenten Reflection: Week Six
“Own It: Almsgiving”
Alms (/ɑːmz/,) or almsgiving involves giving to others as an act of virtue, either materially or in the sense of providing capabilities free.
Jesus talked about almsgiving as an important part of Christian life: "when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" (Mt 6:2-3). This quote does not say IF you give alms, but WHEN, because like fasting and prayer, almsgiving is essential to our spiritual growth.
Some good question to ask ourselves during Lent- especially this Lent, one filed with chaos and suffering…
* How can I use my resources, personal and financial– to help the Church?
*How can I responsibly share my resources with my family and friends to help them during this pandemic?
*How can I reach out to the poor and marginalized, while in isolation?
*How can I use social media to raise awareness and/or give back to my Church community?
*How can I give freely- trusting that God will take care of all my needs?
” In the words of Jesus , "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35).
