Maria Sweeney Joins Evangelization & Discipleship as Youth and Young Adult Minister
The Diocese of Norwich is pleased to welcome Maria Sweeney as our new Youth and Young Adult Minister in the Evangelization and Discipleship Ministry.
Maria, a wife and mother of four, and her family are parishioners of the Cathedral of Saint Patrick, Norwich. Before moving to Connecticut in 2020, she served for many years in parish youth ministry in both the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the Archdiocese of New York, where she led retreats, youth pilgrimages, and parish-based catechetical programs for middle and high school students.
In her own words:
“I first encountered the beauty of the Catholic Church and the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist through a parish youth ministry program. Youth and Young Adult Ministry has been a mission I have continued to feel called to serve since my earliest days as a Catholic.”
Maria brings professional expertise as a Connecticut State Licensed Professional Counselor and is passionate about forming the whole person—mind, body, and soul.
“Ongoing study of the human person through a Catholic framework helps to inform the effort and intention I bring to this ministry. The youth of our time face unique joys and challenges, so I am committed to exploring new methods for sharing the Gospel with those we will encounter through our office.”
Andrea Hoisl, Ministry Director for Evangelization and Discipleship, shared her enthusiasm:
“We are thrilled to have Maria join our team. Her energy, compassion, and experience will be invaluable as we continue our mission of evangelization and catechesis across the diocese.”
Working closely with parishes, Maria will support youth ministers, develop formation opportunities, and create moments for young people to encounter Christ through prayer, discipleship, service, and community.
