Each year on March 25, the Church pauses to celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation, the moment when heaven touched earth in a profound and life-changing way. The account of this sacred encounter is found in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:26–38). On this day, we recall the angel Gabriel’s visit to the Blessed Virgin Mary, bringing news that would alter the course of human history: she was chosen to bear the Son of God.
Scripture tells us:
“The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph… And he came to her and said, ‘Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!’” (Luke 1:26–28)
Mary’s response is one of the most powerful acts of faith ever recorded. Faced with uncertainty and the unknown, she does not retreat. She asks a simple question, “How can this be?” and then, in complete trust, offers her fiat:
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)
In that moment, her yes opened the door to our salvation.
The Annunciation is not only a story of Mary’s obedience. It is also an invitation for each of us. God continues to enter into our lives, often in quiet and unexpected ways, asking for our trust. Like Mary, we may not always understand the path before us. We may feel unprepared or overwhelmed. This solemnity reminds us that grace meets us right where we are.
Mary did not have all the answers, but she had faith. Through that faith, God did something extraordinary.
As we reflect on the Annunciation, we are called to consider our own response to God’s voice. Are we willing to say yes, even when it is difficult? Are we open to the ways He is working in our lives, even when they do not unfold as we imagined?
In a world that often urges control and certainty, Mary shows us a different way, one of surrender, trust, and courage.
Today, may we echo her words in our own hearts: “Be it done unto me according to your word.”
