Each year during Holy Week, the entire Diocese of Norwich—priests, deacons, consecrated religious, and laity—gather with the Bishop at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick to celebrate the Chrism Mass.
This event is a profound expression of unity, as our diocesan family comes together to witness the consecration of Sacred Chrism and the blessing of the Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick. These oils are a tangible sign of the Holy Spirit’s presence in the sacramental life of the Church. From this one celebration, the oils are distributed to representatives from parishes and institutions throughout the Diocese for use in Baptism, Confirmation, ordinations, and the Anointing of the Sick throughout the coming year.
Renewing Priestly Promises
The Chrism Mass is not only a ritual but also a spiritual celebration of the priesthood of Christ, which is present in all the baptized. It also highlights the special ministerial role of ordained priests, who gather with their spiritual father, the bishop, to renew their priestly promises. This renewal serves as an annual reminder of the sacred responsibilities and commitments made at ordination. During this part of the liturgy, the bishop addresses the faithful, asking them to pray for their priests so that God may strengthen them in their ministry and keep them faithful as leaders who guide the community to Christ, the source of salvation. Why Holy Week Matters
The timing of the Chrism Mass during Holy Week is significant. Holy Week is the most solemn period of the liturgical year, in which we commemorate the final days of Jesus’ earthly life, culminating in the Paschal Mystery—his Passion, Death, and Resurrection. This is the foundation of our Christian faith and the redemption of the world. By gathering at this time, we are reminded of our ongoing responsibility, as members of his Body, to make Christ present in the world through the sacraments and by living lives of service to others.
The Sacred Oils and the Church’s Unity
The ritual elements of the Chrism Mass are deeply symbolic. The oils, presented in precious vessels, are brought forward to the bishop, who offers specific prayers of blessing over each. The Oil of Catechumens is used in Baptism, the Oil of the Sick in the Anointing of the Sick, and Sacred Chrism is consecrated for use in Baptism, Confirmation, and the ordination of priests and bishops. The distribution of these oils signifies the unity and mission of the Church—not only here in Norwich, but also in solidarity with Catholics around the world, as dioceses everywhere celebrate this special Mass each year.
Our annual celebration of the Chrism Mass is therefore a powerful manifestation of the Church’s unity, the renewal of priestly commitment, and our deep, continual need for the healing balm of the Holy Spirit through the sacraments as we prepare to celebrate the great mysteries of our redemption. It is through this time of prayer, reflection, and celebration that we are truly connected with the universal Church in a shared act of worship, faith, service, and witness in our world today.
