A new Chapter of the Third Order of Mary was founded at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Essex, Connecticut in May 2006. The local branch of the worldwide Society of Mary originally founded in Lyons, France in 1816, is devoted to performing solid spiritual work for the Church in a hidden way, imitating Mary in humility and mercy thus drawing attention to Jesus and His Gospel message.
Mrs. Lorraine P. Maloney, a Professed Third Order of Mary since 1994 in Brunswick, Maine, moved to Connecticut and helped to found the group with the assistance of the late Fr. Paul Gaumond, then Pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows and the late Fr. Albert DiIanni, Society of Mary, who explained the Marist Spirituality and the rules of the Third Order.
Fr. Arul Peter is the Pastor of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, which includes Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Joseph Churches, and is in full support of the group. T.O.M. members include both men and women, with the spiritual group meeting monthly.
