Lenten Reflection: Week Three

“Own It: Penance”

Penance is a term we use to describe the outward expression of repentance for having done something wrong. The teachings of our faith tell us that penance is an important part of the faith formation process. We cannot grow in faith if we do not self-reflect and recognize areas of our behavior and attitude that do not reflect God’s love and grace. In light of that, penance is necessary if we hope to deepen our personal relationship with God. We do penance because we want to clear away the distractions and negativity we are bombarded with in our world every day. When we do penance we make more room for God in our lives, ridding ourselves of the people, behaviors and habits that keep us from participating in our spiritual and religious life to the fullest.

  • *Have I really loved God above all things or have I put other things — work, money, pleasure— ahead of Him?
  • *Have I made time for God each day in prayer?
  • *Am I whole-hearted in accepting and following God’s teaching or do I only pick and choose the convenient parts of His message?
  • *Have I tried to learn and understand my faith better?
  • *Am I willing to affirm, defend and practice my faith in public and not just in private?
We all need to remember this week that penance is meant for our good. When we do penance (categorized as prayer, fasting, and almsgiving) we open ourselves up to make room for more of God’s unconditional love and mercy. That makes for an amazing week!

This Lent, OWN YOUR FAITH!

This Lenten Season know that you are in our prayers in a special way!
God’s blessings and joy, Andrea, Liza, Marianne & Mary-Jo

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, During the ordination of a bishop, two deacons hold an open Gospel book over the head of the new bishop as the Ordination prayer is read. Do not be afraid; For behold, I proclaim to you, good news of great joy, that will be for all the people. Today, in the city of David, a Savior is born to you, who is Messiah and Lord." Those words, spoken to quaking shepherds keeping watch by night over their flock, evoked great joy. Wit...
