St. Bernard School Welcomes Ukrainian Students

Saint Bernard School will open its doors to seven Ukrainian students for the 2022-23 school year, which begins Sept. 6.

Apex International Partners (AIEP) partnered with the school in Uncasville to assist the high school students in continuing their studies in the United States as their home country continues to fight off a Russian invasion.

“Saint Bernard has long engaged in the mission of helping the less fortunate. While the war in Ukraine is one of many crises in the world today, the opportunity to help children who have escaped from war continue their education could not be ignored,” Donald Macrino, Head of School at Saint Bernard School, said.

Saint Bernard School has waived all tuition and fees for all seven students. AIEP will be housing the students in their Derby, Connecticut-based dormitory over the summer until they are matched with a host family from the Saint Bernard School community.

“Our history of working with Saint Bernard School, homestay support staff and our long record of giving back - both to the local and international communities - gives us pleasure to announce our support for this program,” David Guerrera, president at AIEP, said.

Both AIEP and Saint Bernard School share a commitment to students’ education and well-being. Given the ongoing situation in Ukraine, this partnership was a natural fit.

“When we heard of the need, we opened our doors immediately,” Macrino said. “It’s the fundamental message of our school.”

Three Miles Later
Last Saturday I heard a homily about the importance of taking care of our bodies. Jesus chose to come through our human flesh. He proclaims that our flesh is good. God wants us to take care of our bodies. Listening to this homily, I immediately thought of all the folks running in the St. Joseph School 5k beginning at 9am later that day! What a good example!  Proud supporters of our beloved St. Joseph School in Baltic came out on March 25 to run in the school’s annual 5k fundraiser. Among the spectators were Sisters of Charity, St. Joseph School families and st...

To Love is to Serve: Xavier Dean of Students Puts His Faith in Action
Who knew that a young boy’s Catholic school education would solidify his career path in life? Especially when he really did not want to continue on to a Catholic high school as an adolescent.  But life has a way of redirecting us and showing us what is truly important. That is what happened to Nicholas P. Cerreta, dean of students at Xavier High School in Middletown.  After attending Mount Carmel Catholic grammar school in Meriden, Connecticut, from kindergarten through grade 8, Cerreta was ready to move on to a local public high school, but his mom had o...
