On Sunday, March 15th at St. Joseph's in Rockville, more than 400 people were on hand to celebrate the Confirmation of 33 of our young people from St. Joseph's, Blessed Sacrament, St. Luke's and St. Edward's with Bishop Richard Reidy.
The Catholic sacrament of Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments and is considered a key step in a Christian’s spiritual journey. It completes the grace received at Baptism and strengthens the individual’s relationship with God. Through Confirmation, a person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, empowering them to live out their faith more fully and courageously.
During the rite, a bishop (or sometimes a priest) anoints the candidate with sacred chrism oil, laying hands on them and saying, “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” This moment signifies a deepening of baptismal grace and a personal commitment to the teachings of the Church. Candidates often choose a saint’s name, symbolizing a model of holiness and a guide in their spiritual life.
Confirmation is rooted in Scripture, particularly in the accounts of the apostles receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It highlights the importance of spiritual maturity and active participation in the Church’s mission. Those who receive the sacrament are called to witness Christ in their daily lives, through service, prayer, and moral responsibility.
Ultimately, Confirmation is not just a ritual, but a lifelong commitment to faith. It equips believers with spiritual strength and guidance, helping them grow in holiness and remain steadfast in their relationship with God.
