The Christmas tree, a newer custom rooted in the “tree of paradise” from medieval plays, reminds us that Christ is the Light of the World. It is set up before Christmas and remains until Epiphany, with lights illuminated after the blessing.A parent or family member may lead the blessing, perhaps during the evening meal on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
Opening:
Leader: ✝ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.
Leader: Let us glorify Christ our light, who brings salvation and peace.
All: Amen.
Leader: As Christ was born in Bethlehem, may this tree’s radiance remind us of His unfading light.
Scripture (choose one):
Titus 3:4–7 — The kindness and love of God our Savior appeared.
Ezekiel 17:22–24 — I will plant a tender shoot on Israel’s heights.
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
Intercessions (Response: Lord, give light to our hearts):
— That this tree recall the cross of our salvation.
— That Christmas joy fill our homes.
— That Christ’s peace dwell in our world.
All pray the Lord’s Prayer.
Blessing Prayer:
Lord our God,
We praise You for Jesus Christ, the Light of the World.
Bless this tree and all who delight in its beauty.
May its light reflect the joy and peace of Christ,
who lives and reigns forever.
All: Amen.
Then the lights are illuminated.
Leader: May the God of glory fill our hearts with peace and joy.
All: Amen.
