This unique period in time has afforded us and so many others a new way of experiencing the process of dying with our loved ones. Although the circumstances that surround the dying process are very different, the graces we received on the journey remained the same. The gift of time – from death, to funeral, to burial and final goodbye – has given us the opportunity to ponder the positives and the ne...

Faith Sparks: Family Faith in Isolation
In a recent statement Pope Francis said, “I am thinking of the families under lockdown, children who aren’t going to school, parents who cannot leave the house, some who are in quarantine. May the Lord help them discover new ways, new expressions of love, of living together in this new situation. ...It is a wonderful opportunity to creatively rediscover affection in the family. Let us pray for families so that relationships within the family at this moment might flourish always for the good.” It is an understatement to say that the COVID-19 pandemic has...

Faith Sparks: Celebrating Easter as a Season Not a One-day Holiday
The Lenten season is over and Jesus is out of the tomb. It is time to celebrate the joy of the Resurrection and Christ’s victory over sin and death for as St. Augustine tells us, “We are an Easter people.” But, what does that mean for most of us? As a child growing up in what I would call a fairly devout Catholic family, Easter celebrated the fact that Christ opened the gates of Heaven for all of us and we would one day be reunited with Him in paradise. While I probably appreciated that on some level, most of my memories of Easter Sunday were that after...

Faith Sparks: Help Children Connect to Their Faith Through the Lives of the Saints
As a young man in his 20s, my father lost both of his legs in an industrial accident. As it was the early 1940s and medicine was not as advanced as today, his doctors told him it was unlikely he would ever walk again. But, my father had faith in St. Jude, the patron saint for hopeless causes, to whom he prayed each day, and before the year ended, he was surprising his doctors and walking on two artificial prosthetics – a feat my father always credited to St. Jude. My father’s love and devotion for St. Jude grew. When my older brother was born, my dad insisted...

Making Lent a Season to Welcome and Not Dread
The Lenten season in the Catholic Church is a time when we focus on fasting, sacrifice and prayer. The truth is that most people don’t look forward to doing so for 40 days. Giving up candy, screen time or your favorite celebratory beverage is really not something we ever desire or feel motivated to do. Yet, as Catholics, we have been taught that Lent calls us to focus on all of this. The question becomes, how can we make fasting, sacrifice and prayer more meaningful this Lent? How do we share this Lenten journey as a family? When I was a child, my family would sit ...

Pope Francis Calls Us to Bear Witness to Jesus
It has been said that one of the hallmarks of good writers is the ability to connect their audience to a story. If this is true, then one of the gifts of Pope Francis’ ministry is his ability to connect each of us with the story the Lord wants us to write with our lives. Last October, in launching an Extraordinary Missionary Month, Pope Francis gave a stirring homily in which he spoke about the call each of us has been given to be missionaries. We are missionaries, he wrote, “By living as witnesses: bearing witness by our lives that we have come...

Faith Sparks: A New Year's Resolution With A Twist
By Andrea Hoisl Every year, as we wrap up our Christmas celebrations, our minds shift to thoughts of the New Year. We contemplate making a resolution we may or may not keep. The thought of a resolution sounds so positive and healthy that we cannot help but get drawn into the idea of changing and obtaining a new outlook on life in the New Year. Resolutions fill us with hope for a better year on numerous levels. Unfortunately, statistics tell us that most people abandon their resolution within two weeks of making it! Our resolve is weakened by busyness, winter temperat...

Advent: A Time for Patient Waiting, Not Holiday Rushing
By Liza Roach Christmas is right around the corner. Do you feel like I do – behind already?  You have to make sure the house is decorated, the crèche is out for all to see, the Christmas tree is up in all its glory, the wreath on the door looks festive and inviting, and let’s not forget buying presents for everyone you know in the world!  Overwhelmed enough yet?  We can’t forget to take the perfect family picture for the all-important Christmas Card!  If yours looks like mine, the dog is licking my face as I am reaching down to pick ...

Teaching Children the Art of Joyful Giving
By Mary-Jo McLaughlin Do you recall as a child viewing commercials of famine-stricken children in Africa while watching Saturday morning cartoons? Seeing those pictures, how many of us were compelled to break open the piggy bank and send money to charities hoping to ease the guilt of having more than those hungry children? I remember trick-or-treating with the orange UNICEF box, asking for donations for those same starving children. I guess it eased some guilt I was experiencing by overindulging in candy while children around the world were suffering. One Halloween, ...

Everyday Blessings Recognize God’s Gifts to Us
By Andrea Hoisl Blessings are words that express gratitude for something or show God’s favor. What does the word “bless” actually mean? In Hebrew, the root means “to increase” or “bring down Divine abundance.” So if I bless you, I am asking God to increase your well-being, happiness, or circumstances – in essence, to give you more of Himself. In a world where there is so much going on, we often forget to take time to recognize and acknowledge the many blessings in our lives. Those can include the times when God has given...

Family Prayer Teaches Valuable Life Lessons
by Mary-Jo McLaughlin Is family prayer a part of your family’s life? I have vivid memories as a child kneeling beside my family as we prayed the Rosary. I would look out the window and see neighborhood children playing in their yards and I longed to be with them. Instead, I was cooped up inside participating in something that I saw as little more than a burdensome chore. When I was 11 years old, my mother died and family life as we knew it changed drastically. So many activities that we once did as a family were gone, the family rosary among them. It’s ...
