Bishop's Column: Go into the Whole World and Proclaim the Gospel

October/November 2022 Four County Catholic

Go into the Whole World and Proclaim the Gospel

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

We are fortunate to live in New England. One of the highlights of living in New England is the change of seasons. Each season offers us something unique and different for which to look forward. Seasons are consistent keepers of time from which we can learn and celebrate. Just as certainly as winter turns into spring, we are guaranteed that the greenery of summer will transition to the beautiful palette of colors that awaits us in autumn. The seasons teach us to embrace change.

An upcoming change that I am very happy to announce is that the Four County Catholic, our monthly diocesan newspaper, will be receiving a new look, an enhanced focus and an expanded audience come December.

We need more beauty in our lives, therefore, in December the communications team will unveil the Four County Catholic Magazine. It will be published every other month in a high-quality glossy magazine format. This decision came about because of a few very simple and important reasons. Namely, timely news can be easily found online. During the last few years, we had to learn to get our news online. Even the grandparents among us.

The transition to a high-quality magazine every other month meets the needs of our families to see our diocese in action, but not be our newsfeed. The magazine will feature uplifting articles and high-resolution photos of our diocese. And with this change in format and the frequency of the publications we can now save both time and money allowing us to expand our circulation to every registered Catholic household in the diocese.

A few years ago, at a World Communications Day event, Pope Francis commented that, “the digital world can be an environment rich in humanity, a network not of wires but of people.”

This change will now afford the communications team the time to expand the social media reach of the diocese and our charge to “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)

As your bishop, I am responsible for teaching, governing, and sanctifying you, the faithful of the diocese.  I share these duties with the priests and deacons who serve in your parishes. The purpose of the Four County Catholic has always been to support these three duties. Increasing the circulation to every registered catholic and expanding our presence online will bring us closer to achieving this.

Thank you, always, for your support and faith in the ministries of love and hope that are an extension of your good will and commitment to the loving ministry of Christ our Lord.

May you enjoy an autumn filled with beauty.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Michael R. Cote
Bishop of Norwich

A Prayer of Thanksgiving - 2023
Heavenly Creator, In this season of gratitude and abundance, we give You thanks for our many blessings as we pray for all who struggle with hunger and want. Be with them in the dark of night, when all hope seems lost. Keep their faith strong as they await relief. Let Your goodness flow throughout our hearts and hands as we reach out to one another in the full, true joy of Thanksgiving in Christ. Amen

Bishop's Column - Glory to God in the Highest
November/December 2023 Four County Catholic "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."   My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, As we approach Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas I am reminded of the above verse from the Gospel of Luke which captures the essence of Thanksgiving by giving glory to God, heralds the anticipation and preparation of Advent as we await the birth of Jesus, and encapsulates the joy and goodwill associated with the Christmas season when we celebrate the birth of Christ. This year, our dioc...

Where has the Reverence Gone?
As I begin writing this piece, I am suddenly aware of the fact that this will raise some eyebrows, but here goes: Where has the awe and devotion gone at Mass? A picture is worth a thousand words, but as Jesus well understood, a story can often get one’s point across very effectively. My story is of a dear friend of mine named Gloria. Some years ago, Gloria and her husband relocated from Connecticut to Atlanta, Georgia. She is a devout Catholic and since, at that time in Atlanta, Catholic parishes were few and far between, she spent some time searching for one. Than...
