As farmers prepare for the heart of the growing and harvest season, the Catholic community will gather in Stonington at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, for a special blessing of the land and those who depend upon it.
In keeping with a longstanding Catholic tradition, the blessing of a farm is an expression of gratitude for the gift of creation and a prayer for God’s protection and a fruitful harvest. It recognizes the essential work of farmers and asks God’s blessing upon the land, crops, livestock, workers and families who sustain the local agricultural community. The tradition also reflects the Church’s call to care for creation and to recognize humanity’s dependence on God’s providence.
In honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology and animals, Bishop Richard F. Reidy will offer a special blessing at Wehpittituck Farm, 211 Cove Road, Stonington, at 2:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
The gathering offers an opportunity for people of faith and the wider agricultural community to give thanks for the land, pray for favorable conditions and a bountiful harvest, and ask God’s continued protection for all who work the fields and care for the animals.
