St. Rita of Cascia: Patroness of the Impossible
Feast Day: May 22
In the quiet hills of 14th-century Italy, a woman named Rita lived a life marked by hardship, heartbreak, and, ultimately, holiness. Born in the town of Roccaporena, Rita longed from an early age to enter religious life. But in obedience to her parents, she married a man known for his temper and violent tendencies. Her life as a wife and mother was not easy, but through prayer and patience, Rita brought peace to her home, even softening her husband’s heart before his tragic death.
After losing both her husband and two sons, Rita sought to join the Augustinian convent in Cascia. At first, the nuns turned her away due to her past. But through persistent prayer and a miraculous sign, Rita was finally accepted. She spent the remainder of her life in the convent, living in deep union with Christ and bearing a mysterious wound on her forehead, believed to be a partial stigmata, symbolizing her unity with Christ’s suffering.
St. Rita is known today as the Patroness of Impossible Causes because her own life was filled with situations that seemed insurmountable: a difficult marriage, family tragedy, rejection, and physical suffering. Yet through it all, she remained faithful, hopeful, and entirely surrendered to God’s will.
Her story reminds us that no situation is beyond God’s reach. For anyone facing broken relationships, personal loss, or hopeless circumstances, St. Rita offers the encouragement of perseverance and the promise that with God, even the impossible becomes possible.
On May 22, we honor St. Rita— model of strength, peacemaker, and intercessor for the hopeless— by asking her to pray for us in our own trials, trusting as she did in the God who never disappoints.
