Palm Sunday Concert Planned at Cathedral of St. Patrick

On Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 7:30 p.m., the Cathedral of St. Patrick will resonate with the stirring sounds of sacred music as the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra and the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus present a special Palm Sunday concert.

Under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Toshiyuki Shimada and Chorus Director Daniel McDavitt, the evening promises a moving meditation through music at the threshold of Holy Week.

The concert will feature Dan Forrest’s Requiem, a profound and contemporary work known for its striking beauty and emotional depth. Since its premiere, the piece has captivated audiences worldwide with its luminous harmonies and heartfelt expression of hope amid sorrow.

Also on the program is Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei, his choral arrangement of the beloved Adagio for Strings. Ethereal and deeply prayerful, the work unfolds with a quiet intensity that invites reflection and reverence. Performed with strings, it is sure to envelop listeners in a powerful and contemplative atmosphere.

Set within the magnificent acoustics of the Cathedral, these sacred masterpieces promise a transcendent musical experience fitting for Palm Sunday— a time when the Church enters into the solemn beauty of Christ’s Passion and prepares for the joy of Easter.

Admission is free, but tickets must be reserved in advance.

The Most Reverend Richard F. Reidy celebrated the Saint Patrick Mass at noon on March 17 at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Norwich, drawing the faithful together to honor Ireland’s patron saint and to pray as a Church during the Lenten season. The Week That Changed the World: Stories to Lead You Through Holy Week
I’ll admit it, I look forward to Holy Week even more than Christmas.   Every year, Palm Sunday feels like the Church is saying, “Come in close. Pay attention.” We start with palms, procession, and Hosanna—remembering the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem—and then, almost immediately, we hear the Passion. That shift isn’t jarring by accident. It’s the Church giving us the full Gospel in one sweep: the praise, the suffering, the Cross, and the promise of the Resurrection. Palm Sunday doesn’t ease us into the w...

Bishop Reidy Reflects on the Hope of Holy Week
Carpe diem is an old Roman expression frequently translated as “seize the day.” It reminds us to take advantage of the present moment and not to let opportunity pass us by. Whether an athlete in competition, an investor in the market, or a suitor in love, opportunities must be recognized and grasped, or they can pass away and be lost. Holy Week is one such opportunity. It is the most important week of the Church’s year because it commemorates the most important events of history. The Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and our faithful acc...
