Discovering the Meaning Behind the Symbols That Tell the Story of Our Catholic Faith

The San Damiano Cross

Few symbols are more closely associated with St. Francis of Assisi than the San Damiano Cross. More than a beautiful crucifix, it was before this cross that Francis received the call that would shape the rest of his life.

While praying in the small, weathered church of San Damiano near Assisi, Francis heard Christ speak the now-famous words: "Francis, go and rebuild My Church, which, as you can see, is falling into ruin."

At first, Francis understood the message literally. He immediately began repairing the crumbling chapel with his own hands and later restored several other churches in the area. Over time, however, he came to realize that Christ was calling him to something even greater—to help renew the Church by living the Gospel with humility, faith and service.

The San Damiano Cross is unique because it is an icon as well as a crucifix. Rather than focusing solely on Christ's suffering, it portrays Him as the victorious Savior. Surrounding Jesus are Mary, St. John, Mary Magdalene and others who witnessed His crucifixion. At the top of the cross, Christ is shown ascending to the Father, reminding us that the Cross leads to the glory of the Resurrection.

For more than 800 years, the San Damiano Cross has inspired Christians around the world. It reminds us that Christ's call to "rebuild My Church" was not meant for Francis alone. Each of us is called to help build the Church—not only through the places where we worship, but by the faith we live each day.

Prayer Before the Crucifix
(San Damiano Cross)

by St. Francis of Assisi

Most High, glorious God,
enlighten the darkness of my heart.
Give me true faith,
certain hope,

perfect charity,
sense and knowledge, Lord,
that I may carry out
Your holy and true command.
Amen.

Taking the Light Out From Under the Bushel Basket Every parish has people living just beyond its doors who may never think of the Church until they need it—when a loved one dies, when life raises a question they cannot answer, when loneliness settles in, or when they simply begin wondering whether faith has anything to say to the life they are living. The challenge is reaching them before that moment passes.
