October Marks Respect Life Month: Mary, Mother of Life
Each October, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, a time to renew our commitment to recognizing, cherishing and protecting the dignity of every human life, from conception to natural death. The first Sunday of October, celebrated this year on October 4, is designated as Respect Life Sunday.
The 2026 Respect Life Month theme, “Mary, Mother of Life,” turns our attention to the Blessed Virgin Mary and her profound witness to the sacredness of human life. This year’s image features Virgin of the Lilies by William-Adolphe Bouguereau and reflects upon Mary’s unique role as mother of all the living.
Mary’s life reminds us that every human person is a gift from God, worthy of love and protection in every stage and circumstance. Her faithful “yes” to God also reminds us that welcoming and defending life can sometimes require sacrifice, courage and trust.
Throughout Respect Life Month, Catholics are invited to deepen their understanding of the dignity of human life through prayer, reflection and action. The USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities has provided a variety of resources for individuals, families, parishes, schools and ministries, including prayers, reflections, an action guide and educational materials.
A special Respect Life Month Novena will also be prayed October 22–30 for the protection of human life from conception to natural death. Each day will feature a different pro-life intention, reflection and suggested action to help foster a culture of life.
As we begin Respect Life Month, may we ask the Blessed Mother to help us see every person through the eyes of Christ and to respond with compassion, courage and love—especially when life is vulnerable, unexpected or in need of our care.
Mary, Mother of Life, pray for us.
