Summer Sabbatical: Finding God in Rest

As the days grow longer and the warmth of summer envelops us, many look forward to a well-deserved break from the routines and demands of everyday life. Vacations, leisurely activities, and time with family and friends become the highlights of the season. For Catholics, this season offers a unique opportunity to embrace a summer sabbatical, where we can find God in rest and renewal, blending moments of relaxation with spiritual growth.

The concept of Sabbath rest is deeply rooted in our faith tradition, originating from the biblical creation story. God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, sanctifying it as a day of rest and worship. This divine example encourages us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with God. Summer, with its slower pace, provides an ideal backdrop for integrating this sacred practice into our lives.

True rest goes beyond mere physical relaxation; it involves finding peace and rejuvenation for the soul. During summer vacations, set aside specific times for quiet reflection and prayer. Imagine starting your day with a morning meditation on the porch, where the tranquility of dawn invites you to converse with God. Or consider an evening prayer walk, where the setting sun and the symphony of nature create a perfect environment for gratitude and contemplation. Even simply sitting in silence under a starlit sky can become a profound encounter with the divine. These moments of stillness allow us to hear God's voice and feel His presence in a deeply personal way.

Recreation, derived from the word "re-create," is not just about having fun but also about renewing our spirits. Engaging in activities that bring joy and connect us with God's creation can be transformative. Whether it's hiking through lush forests, swimming in serene lakes, or enjoying a family picnic in a park, these experiences offer a chance to marvel at the beauty of the world God has made. As you immerse yourself in nature, take time to thank God for His wonderful works and reflect on the blessings in your life.

Summer vacations are also an excellent time to deepen our faith through new experiences. Attending Mass at a new parish during your travels can be a refreshing way to experience the universal Church. Visiting a local shrine or holy site can provide a deeper connection to our faith's rich history and traditions. Bringing along spiritual reading material or a journal to reflect on your journey adds another layer of spiritual enrichment. Engaging in family activities that highlight your faith, such as discussing the lives of saints, praying the Rosary, or reading scripture together, can make your leisure time more meaningful and spiritually fulfilling.

Achieving a balance between rest, recreation, and spirituality requires intentional planning and an open heart to God's guidance. Create a vacation schedule that includes time for worship, rest, and activities that bring joy and renewal.

Remember that Sabbath rest is not just a single day but a mindset of honoring God with our time and seeking His presence in all we do.

This summer, let your time off be a sacred blend of relaxation, joyful recreation, and deepening your spiritual life. By embracing a summer sabbatical, you can return to your daily routine with a renewed spirit, ready to serve God and others with a joyful heart. In finding God in rest, we discover the true essence of our faith and the boundless love that sustains us.

Unwrapping the Stories Behind Our Favorite Carols
When my children were in grade school, we hosted several caroling parties in December. Family and friends would pile into the house, and I’d hand out little songbooks I had put together. After a short practice session in the living room, where I could see the Cathedral from the window, we would set out into the neighborhood. We stopped at houses along the way, including the rectory and the bishop’s house, before ending at Sheltering Arms, a senior residence in Norwich. The night always ended back at home with mugs of hot chocolate and slow cookers f...
