Saint Joseph School Golf Tournament A Big Success

FCC News Desk

St. Joseph School in North Grosvenordale recently held its sixth annual Julia Marcoux Memorial Golf Tournament at CT National in Putnam on Thursday, October 3. With prayers and divine intervention, the skies stayed rain-free throughout the tournament, allowing for the approximately 125-player field to enjoy a day at the links in support of the Pre-K through Grade 8 school.

As golfers arrived to register in the late morning hours, they were greeted with a delicious luncheon sponsored by Day-Kimball Hospital, the Foster Corporation, and the MacKenzie Family. Gary Osbrey, aka “Gary O” of WINY of Putnam, hosted a live radio broadcast of the tournament, interviewing many associated with it.

“A strong sense of community was evident at the SJS golf tournament, once again showing the level of support and acceptance the school continues to receive from the residents of Northeastern Connecticut,” Osbrey said. “I am always made to feel welcome at any event hosted by St. Joseph School.”

The shotgun start of the tournament began at noon with David Sizemore, principal of St. Joseph School, offering his thanks to the golf committee for putting on such a tremendous event along with the following title sponsors: The Gates Automotive Group as well as The Black Dog Bar and Grille, along with additional support from Grant-Thornton International, CT National Golf Course, and the Marcoux Family, who continues to financially contribute to SJS in memory of its matriarch, Julia Marcoux. Both Julia and her husband Pete sent their eight children to SJS.  Besides the title and luncheon sponsors, the tournament received from 85 additional donors ranging in contribution levels from tee to gold level sponsors.

The 18-hole tournament wrapped up at approximately 5 p.m., when players and volunteers enjoyed food and fellowship at the CT National Dining Room. A fun evening ensued where prizes from the gold raffle and silent auction were given to the winners.

“As of this writing, the net proceeds from this year’s tournament will exceed $27,000, a three thousand dollar increase from last year’s proceeds of $24,000” said Dr. Andrew MacKenzie, current SJS parent and long-standing chairman of the golf committee. “Although it is a lot of hard work and effort, I know that many players regard our tournament as one of the best golf outings in Northeast CT and also know how important it is to help the budgetary needs of SJS.”

“This event truly personifies the fabric of the SJS community” Principal Sizemore said.  “Every major stakeholder of SJS: parents, teachers, grandparents, friends and the students all made some type of contribution to the success of this day. I am very grateful for everyone’s hard work and effort.”

The mission of St. Joseph School is to create a strong foundation of Catholic faith in a caring, respectful and nurturing environment The school also encourages academic success, instills discipline, and infuses lifetime learning skills in each student. Its school motto is “Where Our Children Shine.”

Upcoming events at St. Joseph School include the next SJS Sunday Breakfast on November 3, which will feature a special Holiday Shopping Event with many local vendors, as well as a variety of school-wide activities during the week of November 4-8 to mark New England Catholic Schools Week.
