Sacred Heart Students Win Second Place In Statewide Christmas Tree Festival

Exhibit at Knights of Columbus museum in New Haven to be on display until February

FCC News Desk

Fifth-graders from Sacred Heart School in Groton traveled to the Knights of Columbus Museum in New Haven on December 2 with their handmade ornaments.

They were there to participate in the museum’s 19th annual Christmas Tree Festival. They had worked for weeks under the guidance of teacher Megan Scully-Rowe and Kristen Thornton, Sacred Heart’s art teacher, to create decorations that fit the festival’s theme of “Christmas in Europe.”

The fifth-grade class chose to focus their tree on the Scandinavian countries. The students, with guidance from Mrs. Thornton, pulled their ideas from the Christmas traditions of Finland, Sweden and Norway.

Schools from across the state each decorated a Christmas tree for the festival, each with their own take on the theme. Sacred Heart students were thrilled to learn that their entry, with handmade flags, felt ornaments and garland, had won second place.

“I am so proud of all my students and their hard work," Megan Scully-Rowe said. "The tree is just stunning! A huge thank you to Mrs. Thornton for developing the theme and working with my students to create their beautiful decorations!”

The Knights of Columbus museum is located at 1 State St, New Haven. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas) The exhibit will run until February 2, 2020.
