On May 13, the Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, commemorating the Blessed Virgin Mary’s first appearance to three shepherd children— Lucia dos Santos and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto— in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917.
Appearing during a time of war, unrest and uncertainty, Our Lady brought a message that remains deeply relevant today: prayer, repentance and trust in God. During the apparitions, Mary urged the children to pray the Rosary daily for peace in the world and for the conversion of hearts.
Over the course of six apparitions, from May through October 1917, thousands would come to witness the events at Fatima, culminating in what became known as the “Miracle of the Sun” on Oct. 13, witnessed by large crowds.
The message of Fatima continues to resonate with Catholics around the world more than a century later. In a world often marked by anxiety, division and suffering, Our Lady’s call is simple yet profound: return to prayer, draw close to Christ and never lose hope in God’s mercy.
The Feast of Our Lady of Fatima also serves as a reminder that God often works through the humble and ordinary. Three young children, hidden from the eyes of the world, became instruments of a message that would echo across generations.
As the faithful honor Our Lady of Fatima this May 13, may her example lead all closer to her Son, and may her call to prayer and peace continue to guide hearts today.
