The World Mission Rosary: Praying With the Heart of the Church

One of the great treasures given to the missionary Church is the World Mission Rosary, a devotion especially dear to Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. In 1951, while serving as National Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, Archbishop Sheen introduced this special Rosary to encourage Catholics to lift their eyes beyond their own communities and embrace the needs of the entire world in prayer.
Archbishop Sheen had a tremendous love for the missions. His famous words, “The world is my parish,” beautifully express the missionary heart that inspired the World Mission Rosary. He understood that we may not all be able to travel to distant lands as missionaries, but every one of us can become a missionary through prayer, sacrifice, generosity, and Christian witness.
The World Mission Rosary is unique because its five colors represent the different regions of our world: green for Africa, red for the Americas, white for Europe, blue for Oceania, and yellow for Asia. As we pray each decade, we spiritually travel around the world, placing its peoples, missionaries, children, families, priests, religious, and catechists into the loving hands of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
This is what makes the World Mission Rosary so significant. It reminds us that our Catholic Faith is bigger than our own parish or diocese. We belong to a universal Church. When one part of the Church suffers, we pray with them. When missionaries bring Christ to those who have never heard the Gospel, we support them. When children in mission lands need food, education, medical care, and—most importantly—the hope of Christ, we remember them.
Throughout October 2026, I invite the faithful of the Diocese of Norwich to join Catholics around the world in praying the World Mission Rosary each day at 3:00 PM. Even if we cannot gather together physically, imagine the power of thousands of Catholics stopping at the same hour and offering Mary’s Rosary for the missionary work of the Church.

As we prepare to celebrate the beatification of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, there could hardly be a better way to honor his missionary legacy than to take up the Rosary he loved and pray for the world he loved.
