Saint Bernard Graduation 2018

Posted on June 06, 2018 in: School News

By Shari L. Marderness

Saint Bernard School celebrated the graduation of 59 students on Friday, May 25, at the Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich. The ceremony included a lively speech from senior Henry Cox, of Pawcatuck, who was chosen by a faculty panel to give the Orator’s Address.

“I speak for most everyone’s experience as a student here when I say that Saint Bernard is home. This is that one-of-a-kind special place that will make you feel welcome … and proud to by yourself,” he said.

This year, 9 alumni parents and 2 alumni grandparents received alumni medals. It is tradition for graduating seniors to present medals to their parents and grandparents who are also Saint Bernard graduates. Recipients were: James Cawley ‘67, Elizabeth Anderson ’83, Chris Baillargeon ‘90, Peter Bergeron ’69, Laura Higgins Beverly ’88, Thomas Londregan ’62, Jeffrey Londregan ’89, Heather O’Brien ‘90, Thomas O’Brien ’90, Lianne Rutty ’86 and Louis Ziegler ’82.

Following the presentation of alumni medals, the Most Rev. Michael R. Cote, Bishop of Norwich conferred the diplomas to the graduates.

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God On January 1, Catholics honor Mary’s unique role in salvation history with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation. This feast underscores Mary’s title as Theotokos, or “God-bearer,” a doctrine officially declared at the Council of Ephesus in 431. At the close of the council, the faithful filled the streets, joyfully proclaiming, “Praised be the Theotokos!” Mary’s title as “Mother of God” is rooted in the Incarnation, where, as St. Paul teaches: “...

The Diocese of Norwich invites you to watch the replay of the Festival of Lessons and Carols, held Sunday, December 21, 2025, at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Norwich. Bishop Richard Reidy's Christmas Message to the Diocese of Norwich
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, During the ordination of a bishop, two deacons hold an open Gospel book over the head of the new bishop as the Ordination prayer is read. By tradition, the new bishop picks a Gospel passage to which the book is opened. I chose, "... Do not be afraid; For behold, I proclaim to you, good news of great joy, that will be for all the people. Today, in the city of David, a Savior is born to you, who is Messiah and Lord." Those words, spoken to quaking shepherds keeping watch by night over their flock, evoked great joy. Wit...
